Living with vocal tremor

A vocal tremor tracker for when your voice shakes and you are steady inside

A chronic illness tracker and gentle companion that already knows what vocal tremor can involve, so you do not have to explain it from scratch.

What vocal tremor can involve

Vocal tremor is a rhythmic shake in the voice that makes pitch or loudness wobble, without the person trying to do anything differently. It is often part of essential tremor, the same condition that can make hands or head shake, and it can be mistaken for spasmodic dysphonia, so a specialist voice assessment is often part of getting a name for it.

The hard part is what other people read into it. A shaking voice gets heard as nerves, upset or frailty, when the person speaking is perfectly steady inside. Many people go quiet in groups and on the phone rather than be misread, which is its own kind of loss.

Essential tremor can cause rhythmic trembling of the hands, head, legs, trunk and voice.

Symptoms checklist

Vocal tremor symptoms checklist to take to your GP

Tick what applies to you, note how often it happens, and take it to your appointment, so the conversation starts further along. It describes your experience. It does not say what is causing anything: ticking most of these does not mean you have Vocal tremor, and ticking a few does not mean you do not. Only a clinician can work that out with you.

The list comes from the NHS and charity sources linked further down this page, and from what people living with vocal tremor tell us they keep an eye on. It is a starting point, not a test.

How a day can feel

If your days sound anything like this, taluvu was made with you in mind.

  • “My voice shakes and people assume I am nervous.”
  • “I am steady inside and it does not sound like it.”
  • “Holding a word steady is the hardest part.”
  • “I stay quiet in groups because of how it sounds.”
  • “I want to be heard without being read as fragile.”

These are the kinds of things taluvu invites you to say in your own words, never a checklist of what anyone “should” have.

What taluvu helps you keep track of

Choose Vocal tremor and it starts you with a palette, not a blank form.

These are things people living with vocal tremor often want to keep an eye on. Remove any you do not need, add your own, and check in with a few taps on the days you have very little to give.

  • Shaky voice
  • Voice wobble
  • Worse when nervous
  • Voice tiredness
  • Hard to hold a word steady
  • Effort to be heard
  • A journal in your own words, not a score
  • A plain-English week view of what stands out
  • A Doctor Summary you own and can print
  • Your care team’s details in one place

taluvu never claims one thing caused another. It shows what's worth noticing and leaves the medicine to your doctor. See how the symptom tracker app works.

Questions people ask

Vocal tremor and taluvu, in plain answers.

Short, honest answers about what taluvu does and does not do for vocal tremor. Nothing here is medical advice.

Is taluvu a vocal tremor tracker?

Yes. Vocal tremor is built into taluvu. Choose it and you start with a palette of a shaky voice, voice wobble, worse when nervous, voice tiredness, hard to hold a word steady and effort to be heard, and you can describe the day in your own words.

Can I record my voice so I can hear it back myself?

Yes. taluvu's voice diary, new in version 1.0.8 (see what's new), lets you rate how speaking went each day and keep a short recording of your own voice with the entry. If you also live with a hand or head tremor, you can note that on the same day. taluvu does not analyse the recording or measure the tremor.

Does taluvu tell me about medication or injections?

No. taluvu does not give treatment advice. Whether medication, injections or voice therapy might apply to you is a conversation for your neurologist, ENT team or voice clinic. If you do have treatment, you can note the day and what you were told, so the record around it is yours to keep.

Why keep a day-by-day record of a voice condition?

Because the shake can vary with tiredness, stress, caffeine and the time of day, and those patterns are impossible to recall accurately months later. A short daily rating gives you something concrete to bring to an appointment.
